The board of trustees at a Massachusetts college voted unanimously this week to begin the process of closing due to persisting financial issues. Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, which was founded in 1900, has “faced significant financial headwinds” in recent years and will soon close its doors. “We know this news will come as a shock and disappointment to many, especially those whose lives have been transformed by their affiliation with Eastern Nazarene College through its rich history,” Dr. David W. Bowser, Chair of the Board of Trustees of ENC, said in an announcement on Tuesday. The college plans to continue serving undergraduate and graduate students who are on track to graduate by the end of the year with Gordon College, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and Trevecca Nazarene University serving as transfer options for all other students. The college says it will also provide job-placement support and access to counseling resources for faculty and staff affected by the closure. In voting to shut the college, Bowser said the institution will transition “into a new educational enterprise that will carry on ENC’s legacy of providing a transformational education that equips diverse students to lead and serve our world as agent of Christ’s love and truth.” Eastern Nazarene College President Rev. Dr. Colleen R. Derr added, “While the outcome of this process is known, the process to get there remains fluid. Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama resigned on Tuesday, following a months-long investigation into an alleged affair he’d been having with the wife of a subordinate officer. The scandal, which broke only after the city issued a news release earlier this month, marred what had been to-that-point a successful tenure for the chief — one that saw reductions in violent crime and an increase in the number of sworn officers serving the city. Balderrama is by no means the first Fresno police chief to become embroiled in controversy. There are stories of scandal within the department all the way back to William T. Shaw in 1906, and at least seven decades worth of documented reports on Fresno police chiefs who were investigated, fired or even jailed for perceived misconduct.

roles in the fentanyl poisoning death of a 19-year-old single mother, the United States Attorney’s Office Western District of Texas announced Thursday, June 27 in a news release. According to court documents, Kathy Lee Nicole Bradford, 32, coordinated the sale of M-30 pills to a woman in El Paso in April 2022. On Bradford’s behalf, codefendant Patricia Tafoya, 40, delivered 10 counterfeit M-30 pills containing fentanyl to the purchaser, who consumed some of the pills and, as concluded by the El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office, died of “acute fentanyl toxicity,” according to the news release. Bradford admitted in March to knowing the pills contained fentanyl, pleading guilty to one count of distribution of a controlled substance causing death or serious bodily injury, according to the news release. She was sentenced to 168 months in federal prison.
